Overview
My Project revolves around catering a digital platform for young educators and activists, providing a space for collaboration, sharing resources, join communities and having the ability to amplify awareness and impact. The aim of this design is to address the specific needs of this particular target audience by designing interfaces that facilitate communication, exchange, knowledge, and activism.

Functional Needs
Communication: This is crucial for activists and educators to share information, and mobilise
communities. Messaging, forums, and live chat features will allow theme to connect and organise such with each other.
Findings & Analysis
Understanding User Needs through Empathy
While exploring the importance of empathy in design thinking, I prioritized a user-centred approach by immersing myself in the world of young environmental activists. This helped me uncover insights that go beyond surface-level data, focusing on the users’ lived experiences and emotional needs.

Key Insights
-
User-Centred Design: By understanding the unique challenges faced by young activists, I identified the need for a digital platform that fosters communication, resource sharing, and community building. Features like live streams, feedback hubs, and discussion forums were crucial to supporting this vibrant community.
-
Emotional and Functional Needs: The users seek a platform that not only meets their functional needs—such as communication and resource access—but also their emotional needs. A sense of belonging, empowerment, and emotional support are vital for sustaining their activism.
-
Inspiration from Activist Apps: Researching existing activist apps, I learned that centralizing communication, event organization, and resource sharing is key. These insights guided the creation of features that align with the goals and values of my target audience.

Design Implications
-
Empathy in Action: By stepping into the users’ world, I designed an interface that caters to both their emotional and practical needs. The platform is not just a tool, but a space for connection, motivation, and empowerment.
-
Balancing Novelty and Reliability: Users value the spontaneity and community engagement offered by surprise elements like event updates and live interactions, balanced with reliable resources and communication channels.
Through this process, I developed solutions that are technically sound and deeply rooted in the human experience, ensuring that the design resonates with its intended audience.

How do I address the need for connection while staying true to the spontaneous nature of activism?

During my research, users expressed a strong desire for features that fostered community and communication. However, they also valued the spontaneity and organic nature of activism, where events and interactions can happen unexpectedly. Wouldn’t over-structuring these features undermine the grassroots, impromptu energy that makes activism so impactful?

To reconcile these needs, I brainstormed various approaches. I ultimately decided to design a dynamic event feed that updates in real-time, allowing users to engage with both scheduled and spontaneous activities as they unfold.
